Analysing and synthesising

Abstract Coder

Read each record's abstract, highlight passages and code them, then group codes into categories and themes. Write analytical memos as you go, and export the coded records, excerpts, codebook and a thematic report.

Start from a CSV

A Zotero CSV export works as-is (File → Export Library/Collection → CSV). Any other CSV works too: you choose which columns hold the title, abstract and authors. A coded project CSV exported from this tool reopens with all its coding.

Resume a project

Open a project file (.json) you exported earlier. It holds the records, codebook, excerpts and memos, so you can carry on from another computer.

01Read & code

Select any passage in a title or abstract and give it one or more codes. Add a comment to the passage or the whole record.

02Build categories & themes

Drag codes into categories and categories into themes. Rename, merge, recolour and define them as the analysis develops.

03Retrieve & compare

Pull up every excerpt for a code, category or theme across records, and see a records × themes matrix.

04Export

Get coded records (your original columns plus codes), a long-format excerpt table, the codebook, memos and a thematic report.
